2007 Flower Show & Fun Dog Show

Oakhanger residents basked in the sun at the annual Flower Show and Fun Dog Show.  The afternoon began with the Fun Dog Show organised and directed very professionally by Yvonne Joslin and her team.  The judges were Sarah Kinch and Carol West, who picked the top 5 dogs from 14 classes.  The Best in Show was “Marble” the whippet, owned by Jackie Adams with Reserve Best in Show going to “Lili” the springer spaniel, owned by Diana Gates and handled by Sarah Boxall.

The Doggy Tombola was kindly sponsored by Springfield Nurseries, Burns Pet Nutrition and James Wellbeloved and many donations were made by villagers.

Competitors did not go hungry as the Barbeque, run by Alan Wynde and his team, served hot dogs and burgers to “hot” dog owners and visitors throughout the day!

Entries to the Flower Show were down due to the awful summer although the children’s section and handicrafts were well subscribed with several very skilful entries.  Everyone appreciated the two super new marquees with windows, generously donated by two Oakhanger residents.  The Flower Show exhibits were, as usual, beautifully displayed and coordinated by Alan Driver and his team.

The Children’s sports were run by Paul Benwell and helpers who kept the children entertained with wheelbarrow, sack and water shuttle races with the addition of two new races, welly kicking and grass-ski racing, both of which proved very popular.

It is impossible to list every stall and sideshow and to thank everyone individually here, but everyone’s time, effort and sponsorship was greatly appreciated – thank you to everyone who helped including the behind the scenes people coordinated by Tom McMeekan and Steve Goater and helpers, who put up the marquees and tables and also cleared them away.

The refreshments in the Village Hall, were the photographic competition was displayed, was run by Alice Cowie and Rachel Pritchard and their team who had a busy afternoon.  Our thanks go to all those who made cakes for the teas and the cake stall.  Another “hot” seller was the icecream stall!

The cups, trophies and prizes where presented by our May Queen, Elizabeth Haines, followed by an  auction of produce. The day was rounded off by a splendid meal for 70 in the Marquee coordinated by Sheila Goater and her culinary team.

Village Hall Chairman, Finella Kilner said” Everyone had a very enjoyable day, enhanced by the unexpected tropical weather”.

The excellent sum of £2,230 was raised for the Oakhanger Village Hall.
